The purpose of this website is to evaluate and to proof that the use of Natural Chilean Nitrate, as a source of nitrogen (N), is in accordance with the criteria and principles of organic agriculture.

The website is structured according to the IFOAM "Criteria to Evaluate Additional Inputs to Organic Agriculture", as presented in appendix 3 of the "IFOAM Basic Standards for Organic Production and Processing" document, which was approved by the IFOAM General Assembly, Victoria, Canada, in August 2002.

The Criteria applied on Natural Chilean Nitrate to Evaluate Additional Inputs to Organic Agriculture, found in the IFOAM Basic Standards - Appendix 3 are :

1. Natural Chilean Nitrate is Essential and Necessary

2. Natural Way of Production of Chilean Nitrate

3. Considerations on the Impact on the Environment

4. Human and Animal Health and Quality

5. Socio Economic Aspects and Values (Ethics)

Natural Chilean Nitrate has been used as a fertilizer for more then 100 years and is authorized (on a regulated status) in organic agriculture in the USA (NOP (National Organic Program), USDA, National List of Allowed and prohibited Substances).

The product is presented to the CODEX ALIMENTARIUS Committee on Food Labelling with the request from the Delegation of Chile to include natural sodium nitrate in the list of accepted sources of nitrogen for organic crops.

Natural sodium nitrate is currently being evaluated by IFOAM.
